The most prestigious international football competition has wrapped up in Australia and New Zealand with Spain winning their first ever world title.

From 20 July to 20 August, the world’s best female footballers competed for glory in the ninth edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup. The 2023 event marked the first time that Oceania hosted the tournament.

The inaugural FIFA Women’s World Cup took place in 1991 with China as the host nation. The United States claimed gold by defeating Norway 2-1 in the final. The USWNT were also defending champions in 2023, having beaten the Netherlands in the final four years ago at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais in France.

USA and Germany are the only nations to have won multiple World Cup titles. Japan and Norway have each lifted the trophy once with Spain as the most recent addition to the select club.
