Samsung Kies is a free software application developed by Samsung for creating a connection between Windows or MAC desktop and the latest Samsung Smartphones and tablet computers. In simple words, Samsung Kies connects your mobile phone to your PC, making it easier for you to create backups, restore the old backups, synchronize the data between the device and your computer, transfer files between your phone and the PC, find new applications for your smartphone, flash the latest firmware updates to your phone, and can do much more. Usually, a connection can be made with the USB cable or through the Wireless LAN (WiFi). For firmware upgrades phone has to be connected using a USB cable only and WiFi connection is sufficient for doing other tasks. Here is the simple tutorial to take backups and to restore the data back to your mobile phone using Samsung Kies.
Versions and editions
Kies is available for both Windows PC and Mac PC. For Windows two major versions are available. To download Samsung Kies, Kies3 and Kies for Mac, go to the official Kies Download page. In Kies download page, read the instructions and the system requirements for installing Kies on your computer. Click/tap on the appropriate download buttons. For the feature phones, Smart Phone/Tablet before Galaxy Note III that includes Galaxy S4, Note II, etc, click Kies Download button. For the Smart Phone/Tablet from Galaxy Note III (Android OS 4.3 or over), click Kies3 Download button. A separate version is available for Mac PC. Mac users can download and install Kies for Mac.
Backup data using Kies
Install the software by double-clicking the setup file. When installed, open Samsung Kies and connect your phone using a generic USB cable. The connection can be made through WiFi as well. For demonstration, I’m connecting my Samsung Galaxy Grand Max to my computer with the generic USB cable using Samsung Kies 3. If you are connecting your phone for the first time, Kies will install all the drivers necessary for the computer to make communication with the phone.
Once the phone is connected, under connected devices list, you will see your phone name in the top left corner. Click the Phone name and navigate to the Backup/Restore tab. In the data backup, select the data you want to back up. Click backup to initiate the backup process. A pop-up window will appear, showing the progress of the backup process. When everything is over, a success message will appear in the pop-up. Click OK in that to finish the backup process. All the selected data is now backed up on your computer. Check the screenshots provided below for details.

Restore the backed up data using Kies
This backup can be used to restore the data back when you are resetting the phone to the factory defaults. Restore process is similar to the backup. Under Backup/Restore click Restore data. Select the backup folder to restore. Now the software will show the list of backed up data in that particular backup file. Select the data which you want to restore. Now click Restore button. A pop-up window will appear, showing the progress of restore process. When everything is over, a success message will appear in the pop-up. Click OK in that to finish the restore process. Check the screenshots provided below for details.
