This Simplest tutorial will walk you through the steps involved in changing the permalink structure of your WordPress blog. In simple words, changing the URLs through which your individual posts, pages, taxonomies, and archives are accessed. If you do not want to try this directly on your live server, try this on a local server installed on your computer. My tutorial on running a web server locally on your computer using WampServer may help you.

What are Permalinks?

Permalinks are the permanent URLs to your individual pages and blog posts, as well as your category and tag archives. A permalink is the web address used to link to your content. The URL of the individual posts and pages is permanent and never change and hence the name permalink. You should be very careful in choosing the permalink structure. Even though it is easily changeable, the URLs already indexed in Google have to be re-indexed with the new URLs. Also, you have to write 301 redirection rules to point them to the correct URL for SEO concern. So choose the permalink structure that never needs changing.

Benefits of changing the permalink structure

When installed, the URL structure of the WordPress will be plain and it looks like ‘http://domain-name.com/?p=123‘. For a blogger, SEO matters a lot. Definitely, Google and the readers of the blog won’t like this permalink structure. For these reasons, the permalink structure should be changed to something similar to ‘http://domain-name.com/post-name/‘. Read more on the official site.

How to change the Permalink Structure?

WordPress offers you the ability to create a custom URL structure for your permalinks. This can improve the aesthetics, usability, and forward-compatibility of your links. To change the Permalinks, go to Settings > Permalinks from the left navigation pane. The Permalinks screen allows you to choose a default permalink structure. You can choose the pre-defined structures from the common settings or choose a custom structure. See the screenshot provided below for reference.

Changing the Permalink Structure - WordPress

In Getcooltricks.com, we use the Permalink structure of

https://www.getcooltricks.com/%category%/%postname%/

Choose the permalink structure that suits your need. For example, if you want to use only the post name, click the post name option available in the common settings. If you want to build a custom structure, use the available tags. Clicking the tags provided below the custom structure will add them to the custom structure automatically. This option is not available in the older version of WordPress.

The commonly used Custom Structure tags are

%year%
%monthnum%
%day%
%hour%
%minute%
%second%
%post_id%
%postname%
%category%
%author%

Use them to create a custom Permalink. Don’t forget to save the changes by clicking the ‘Save Changes’ button.

Changing the Category and Tag base

This is an optional step and is not necessary in most of the cases. By default, WordPress prefix the category and tag base to the URLs like

http://domain-name.com/category/windows/
http://domain-name.com/tag/smartphone/

This option will change the default category and tag base. For example, if you type article in category base, WordPress will output the URL as

http://domain-name.com/article/windows/

It works in the same way for the tags as well. Check the screenshot provided below for reference. Click Save Changes button at last.
