Google had rolled out its Auto Ads units to all the Publishers on Wednesday (21 Feb 2018), which was in beta before. It is the intelligent ad unit that uses machine learning to place the ad units on your website without much effort from your side. Once implemented, it analyzes your content, displays ads automatically in the preferred location, and optimizes the ad performance on your behalf. The main advantage of this ad unit is, it saves a lot of time for you.

You don’t need to place the ads individually on all the pages at the preferred location. Instead, a single piece of code placed in the header section of your website inserts the Google ads intelligently and increases the revenue and user experience. Let us see the simple steps to create and implement AdSense Auto Ads to your Blog or Website. If you still want to use the traditional display ad units our tutorial on Creating and using Adsense ads may help.

Advantages of using this Ad

  • Works well with the already placed ad units. You don’t need to delete the ad codes which are implemented already. This intelligent ad unit senses the old code and places the ads accordingly.
  • Since Google’s machine learning is used in this unit, the ad units are well for maximum viewability. Hence, there will be a great improvement in the revenue.
  • It only places the ads that are most relevant to your content. Hence, the user experience is increased.
  • You don’t need to select the placement for each ad. Place a single piece of code in the header section and Google takes care of the rest.

How to create this Auto Ad?

Sign in to your AdSense account. Once signed in, click My Ads tab from the left navigation panel. When you open the Auto Ads tab for the first time, you will be shown with the Getting Started button. Select Get Started. You will be taken to the ‘Choose your global settings page. Select the ad formats you would like to show on your website. It includes all the Ad units including the page-level ads. The code to implement the page-level ads is the same as this code. If you had implemented the page-level ads already, you don’t need to place this code again. Just configure the settings or else continue with the following steps. After selecting the ad format click Save. Check the following screenshot for details.

Select the Auto Ad formats and click SAVE

The next page appears with the ad code. Click Copy code on that. The code to implement the auto ad unit is ready now. Check the screenshot provided below for reference. It is the time to place them on your website.

Click Copy Code to copy the Auto Ad code

Implementing the Auto Ads on the website

Once copied, log in to your Website’s Control Panel or the File manager. From there, edit the HTML and paste the copied code at the end of <head>… Ad code </head> section. This code can also be placed in the opening section of the <body> Ad code … </body> tag as well. If you are running a dynamic website, edit the header file and place this code in the <head> section. The implementation is so easy for WordPress blogs. For checking, I used a simple plugin called “AdInserter”, on my WordPress blog to implement this code. You can use any other plugin that inserts the script in the header. If your theme provides the option for the header code implementation, you can use the same. After implementation, the ad code should appear at the end of the head section as shown in the screenshot provided below.

Auto Ad code should Appear in the head section like this

It will take some time (20 Mins approx) to display the ad units. Please wait until that time. After implementation, I have seen the ads intelligently placed inside the contents at several locations, in the sidebar at several locations, above the author box, below the comments section, and above the footer. I have also seen Matched content ads after the footer section in the mobile view.  If you have found other placement positions, let us know in the comment box available below this post.

Customization

This Auto Ad unit does not come with any customizations that are available in the traditional ad units. The only option it provides is URL grouping. For example, if you don’t want to show the vignette Ads and the Anchor Ads in a particular URL or a whole website, this option is helpful. In simple words, if you want to have a different ad format in different URLs, this option comes in handy. Create a new URL group, by clicking the ‘New URL Group‘ button in the “Advanced URL settings” of the Auto Ads. Check the screenshot given below for reference.

Auto Ad Advanced Settings page

It will show the list of URLs authorized to use your AdSense code. Select the URL that you want to customize and click ‘Next‘. Please note that selecting the primary domain includes all the sub-domain. If you want to select only a sub-domain, expand the primary-domain and select only the sub-domain you want to customize. If the URL is not in the list, click the ‘Add URL‘ button to add a domain, subdomain, section or path. Check the screenshots provided below for details.

Select the URL/URLs to customize Auto Ad settings

On the next screen (“Select ad settings” Screen), select the ad formats you want to show for that particular URL/page/domain and click ‘Next’. You will be taken to the review screen where you can name your URL group, review the settings and click ‘Save‘. Two URL groups cannot have the same URL, which limits each URL to have only one setting. You can see all your URL groups created on the Auto Ads page. You can edit the URL Group later from there. Check the screenshots provided below for details.

Name your Auto Ad URL Group and click Save

Quick Tips

  • Setup Auto Ads link at the top right corner in the Auto Ads tab can be used to copy the Ad code (Check the screenshot).
  • Use the Advanced URL settings for showing or hiding a particular ad format from a URL/domain.
  • Place the code in the header section for better implementation.
  • 2 URL Groups cannot have the same URL.
